Frustrating Php/WordPress Upgrade
Just last night I tried to upgrade my web server to the latest version of Php (4.3.10). This should teach me not to make major changes late at night.
It was around 12:30 a.m. last night/this morning when I started the install. I initially upgraded my laptop and verified that everything seemed to work.
I then connected to the server, downloaded the Php installer and installed it. When I finished the installation, I checked my site to verify that everything was working. Whoops! My WordPress installation had basically gone belly up. It was throwing all kinds of SQL errors, and, for some reason, Php didn’t know how to handle arrays any more. I couldn’t even log into the admin site. Yikes!
I had been meaning to upgrade my WordPress from 1.2.1 to 1.2.2 so I decided to see if that would address the issue (again, it was very late and I wasn’t thinking very clearly!) By now, it was around 1 a.m.
I rolled the new WordPress in and decided to check my site. Still busted. Well, at this point I decided to roll the Php back to 4.3.9 to see if it would just go away. After putting the old Php in, everything seemed to be fine. Phew. So I went on to sleep and decided to try again this afternoon.
Well, I just did the same thing for about an hour: install the new Php, watch my site die, roll back to the old Php and see it start working again.
Finally, I decided to get the Php installer that I used on my laptop and copy it to the server and use it to install the new version of Php. Guess what happened?
That’s right, everything was fine. I had a corrupt installer. Duh!
